Abstract

Samarkand has a number of specific regional economic characteristics which attract growing interest from specialists in different spheres of business. Here is a run-down of some of the areas of opportunity for foreign investment. Samarkand is known worldwide as a tourist centre of Middle Asia. The city has preserved intact great oriental historic, architectural and religious monuments which annually attract thousands of tourists. The Samarkand region has large deposits of marble, granite and other construction materials. But their production facilities have low technological standards and need retooling. The city has considerable scientific potential. It has two research centres and six university-level educational institutions. These facilities can train experts in marketing and management with assistance from foreign partners. The city also has ample labour resources. Samarkand has all conditions for speedy economic growth.
