Abstract
The rates of nitration in sulphuric acid of the trimethylphenylammonium ion and of 1-chloro-4-nitrobenzene increase and pass through maximum values when various solutes are added to the anhydrous acid. When ammonium sulphate is added, the rates for both substrates increase to more than 20 times their values in the anhydrous acid. The relative rates of nitration of the two substrates for the systems studied are compared with the relative rates for aqueous sulphuric acid.
