Abstract

On several occasions in recent years the writer has heard the remark that if the sales of a book designed for the professional preparation of teachers reached or exceeded five thousand copies within five years of the date of publication, the book was considered a success. Judged by this standard, books on the teaching of arithmetic are rarely unsuccessful.
