Abstract
The available evidence from the lower Salt River Valley refutes the postulated Salado invasion during the Hohokam Classic period. With the probable exception of polychrome ceramics, none of the postulated intrusive traits were associated with Salado influences impinging upon the Hohokam. Since it is no longer reasonable to associate intrusive polychrome ceramics with an invasion phenomenon, other possibilities, such as trade networks, should be investigated. Suggested Hohokam trade items include copper bells, and shell, both obtained from areas to the south of the Hohokam heartland, and cotton and other domestic crops, produced locally by Hohokam agriculturists.
