Abstract

In this article, the author seeks to outline an overall picture of the sacral place-names of pre-Christian Nordic (North Germanic) type in the northern parts of Norway and Sweden. She first deals with the theophoric names that appear there and discusses which deities are represented in these names. Furthermore, she addresses names that contain or may contain a word for ‘holy place’ or ‘cult place’. Finally, she discusses names containing a word for ‘holy’ or ‘sanctity’. The overview that the article wants to give is intended to offer comparative material for a discussion of Sami sacral place-names in Scandinavia. However, a summary overview of these is still a desideratum.
