Abstract
AbstractSafety in operations and processes has historically been a focal point of management. Process safety encompasses a holistic approach toward a strategy for hazard identification, quantifiable risk assessment and safety management. Process safety is key to an industry’s QHSE outlook & prioritizes an approach that focuses on preventing and mitigating major process incidents. Incidents in a process industry would typically be a near miss, minor & major accident. These accidents could be fires, explosions or toxic releases that eventually transpires to consequences of high economic & social impact. The very fact that accidents are unpredictable makes them the most difficult process parameter to forecast, however, leaves scope for incident probability estimation by various scientifically proven approach. Accident probability estimation is the common and central step of safety management systems in oil and gas industries against commonly occurring potential accidents. This paper gives a review on drilling process and risk assessment methods for safe operation of process industries. Various techniques have been developed to assess risk using qualitative and quantitative risk analysis. The impact of digitization of processes has opened a plethora of big data & incident records that assists various assessment tools to carry out dynamic risk assessment. Such dynamic risk assessment pivots upon the availability of real time or feedback data on live processes to evaluate and remodel initial failure probabilities of events and safety barriers, as updated information surfaces during the course of the specific operation. The outcomes of such dynamic modeling provide groundbreaking support to the evaluation of existing process safety, optimizing modification & preventing probable cause of accidents. These dynamic risk analyses have created a paradigm shift in approach toward improving process safety & play a crucial role in several process industries.
