Abstract

Introduction/Objective: Capillary blood glucose (fingerstick, FS) monitoring and sliding scale insulin (SSI) are used routinely in the nursing home (NH). The efficacy of prolonged FS glucose monitoring (FSGM) and SSI are not well-established, especially in this frail population. A 2006 study at a 672-bed NH demonstrated that frequent FS testing did not improve glycemic control. Therefore, a protocol to optimize FSGM was piloted. Early results were promising. Safety and efficacy data at 1-year are presented.
