Abstract
IEEE 696/S100 is a well established industry standard bus. The large variety of proprietary S100 cards available allows the designer to tailor hardware to particular system requirements, with the advantage of reduced design cycle time and consequently lower product cost. This paper discusses the development of the bus and highlights aspects which give the bus its flexibility for systems design. The commercial advantages of S100 continue to be exploited by OEMs and some examples of applications are presented.
