Abstract

Objectives: To describe the involvement of medical staff in scientific research and the factors that affected it at Tien Giang Central General Hospital (TGCGH) between 2017 and 2021. Methodology: From January 2022 to August 2022, a mixed-methods study was conducted at TGCGH that combined elements of quantitative research (a cross-sectional study design using secondary data) and qualitative research (six in-depth interviews with leaders and three group discussions of health staffs). Results: Each medical staff who participated in scientific research activities at TGCGH from 2017 to 2021 was the principal investigator for, on average, about 1.0 research projects per year. The majority of publications were local articles. Hospital staffs were the first authors of that publication, with an average of 1.0–1.3 articles per person per year. The number of international articles in the ISI/Scopus catalog was low. The following factors affect the participation in scientific research: 1) hospital strategy to support scientific research; 2) adequate/timely research management; 3) policy to reward scientific research; 4) young staffs; 5) low funding for scientific research; 6) lack of research training; 7) limitation in the organization of "research groups"; and 8) insufficient time for research activities. Conclusions: Medical staffs of TGCGH have actively participated in scientific research and management factors have affected this participation. Keywords: Scientific research participation, influencing factors, hospital,
