Abstract
The extensive and ambitious Vostok 2018 military exercises in eastern Russia were designed to test the Russian armed forces’ capacity to undertake theatre-level operations involving ground forces engaged in high-intensity defensive and offensive combined-arms efforts. They signalled that Russia is readying itself for a possible confrontation with a large, technically sophisticated military force.
