Abstract

Psyching Teams (PTs) are becoming popular at endurance races. In this article, we examined participant engagement with a first-time PT and gauged perceptions of encouragement using the IMPACT framework (Gibbs-Nicholls et al., 2022) and reflected on our experiences in creating a PT. This study included 44 recreational runners. Only 6% of the participants accessed a pre-race mental performance website. There were four primary themes from open-ended qualitative data regarding how PTs can provide support: General Encouragement, Bring the Energy, Course Logistics, and Lack of Awareness. For future suggestions, the participants recommended improving awareness of the PT through two main channels: the race website and social media. Overall, this investigation corroborates the use of the IMPACT framework for providing support at long-distance races. Additionally, we include recommendations for practitioners hoping to start a PT.
