Abstract
The article presents, in the chronological order, directives and reflections in the area of work organization, management, decision-making, effective functioning, leadership and strategy which prevailed in the period from Descartes to Taylor. At the beginning the contribution of social sciences and engineering as well as military knowledge into the development of scientific management was presented. Next, the paper reviews the achievements of the forerunners of management over the period from the 16th to the 19th century. The author stresses the fact that management sciences were developed at the turn of the 19th and the 20th centuries as a result of knowledge accumulation since the ancient times in the field of problem solving related to various forms of organized activity. The final part of the paper discusses social, technical and economic conditions for the development of scientific management.
