Abstract

J. Oelsner published the first article on the royal titulature in cuneiform literature during the Hellenistic period in Zeitschrift fur Assyriologie some 40 years ago. 1 The following article intends to focus especially on the Diadoch Antigonus Monophthalmus and the kings of the Seleucid dynasty, because a lot more cuneiform material for these periods is now available. Because Babylonia was a part of the Hellenistic state of the Seleucids, I will first outline the practice in Greek documents in the Seleucid Empire and the royal titles (both Greek and local) in other Hellenistic realms. Finally the cuneiform tradition concerning royal titulature will be considered.
