Abstract

A theory is developed to treat rotational and finite strain contributions to the spin-lattice coupling in paramagnets. The spin system is described by pseudospin operators whose spatial rotational properties may be unknown. Measurements of the magnetoelastic shifts in the elastic constants of two rare earth vanadates are in excellent agreement with the theory.
