Abstract

A short range interaction between displacement of the rare-earth ion and the local deformation of its environment in rare earth vanadate is noticed. Anomalies in the dielectric constant as well as the specific heat and others are discussed based on this secondary effect accompanying the cooperative Jahn-Teller phase transition.
