Abstract

A computer analysis of the equilibrium status of many important cations in soil indicates that most cations, toxic as well as essential, are bound to the solid phase. The release of particle-bound cations to the soil solution may be a slow process in comparison to the removal rate from the soil solution by roots. The presence of a specific root surface apparatus for extracting such cations is predicted.
