Abstract

Root stresses of the thin-rimmed helical gears with symmetric and asymmetric web arrangement of helix angle β0=10, 20 and 30° were measured in meshing process from the beginning of engagement to the end of engagement by means of the strain gage method, and then effects of rim and web thickness, web structure and helix angle on the change of the root stress, the maximum root stress and the worst meshing position were examined. Bending fatigue tests of thin-rimmed helical gears with symmetric and asymmetric web arrangement meshed at the worst meshing position were carried out, and effects of rim and web thickness, web structure and helix angle on the bending fatigue strength of the thin-rimmed helical gear with web arrangement were determined. Furthermore, these results were compared with those of solid helical gears.
