Abstract

The results of operative treatment of twenty-two patients with mitral insufficiency utilizing valvuloplasty technics are described. Although results are imperfect, the absence of late complications and the low operative mortality suggest that this procedure should continue to be utilized in selected cases. The presence of a postoperative murmur, the failure of complete relief of symptoms in all cases, and the late recurrence of symptoms in a small percentage of the cases suggest that the procedure is not ideal. Until a more satisfactory valve prosthesis is available, however, these procedures should be seriously considered for the correction of mitral regurgitation in patients with a dilated annulus and noncalcified valve, ruptured chordae, leaflet perforation, or cleft leaflet.
