Abstract

The effect of combining rare earth oxides with transition metal oxide catalysts on the catalytic performance was investigated. A prominent enhancement in the catalytic performance was found in many significant reactions related to environmental protection, e.g. CO 2 hydrogenation to form CH 4 and methanol, CH 4 re-forming from H 2O and CO 2, purification of H 2 and NO x reduction. When a small amount of a precious metal was combined additionally, a dramatic increase in the activity was observed. The roles of the rare earth oxide and precious metal in these catalysts are discussed.
