Abstract
Oxidation of cytosolic NADH by O 2 regulates the supply of reducing equivalents for nitrate reductase. Inhibition of the cytochrome c oxidase pathway stimulates nitrate reduction. The cyanide insensitive alternative oxidase is not involved in this reaction because inhibition by SHAM (salicylhydroxamic acid) did not promote in vivo nitrate reduction. The role of mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase (which oxidizes exogenous NADH) in regulating nitrate reduction in wheat leaves in vivo is discussed.
