Abstract

Complex formation in the systems acetonitrile-DMSO-water acrylic acid-DMSO-water and methacrylonitrile-acrylic acid-DMSO-water has been investigated by infrared spectroscopy. The number of nitrile molecules bound by H bonds with water, and of acid molecules bound by H bonds with dimethylsuphoxide has been quantitatively evaluated for various H 2O concentrations in the systems. The kinetics of radical polymerization and copolymerization of methacrylonitrile and acrylic acid in DMSO-water solutions has been studied. The influence of complex formation and of the composition of the medium on the rates of these reactions is discussed as well as its influence on relative reactivities of the comonomers.
