Abstract
Assessment of soil nutrients and fertility status for three land use systems was carried out in Mokokchung, Nagaland, which lies under Eastern Himalayan region. Soil fertility indicators, viz., bulk density, soil pH, soil organic carbon, available Nitrogen (N), available Phosphorus (P), and available Potassium (K) were analyzed for Alder based fallow Jhum, Jhum and fallow Jhum lands, using standard procedures. Significant differences were observed in the soil properties, where the risk of top soil erosion along with nutrients was found to be more in Jhum lands. Alnus nepalensis (Alder) based fallow Jhum land system was found superior as significantly higher soil organic matter (3.20%) was detected that contributed to soil fertility and better nutrient cycling. Therefore, Alder based land use system may be replicated in other Jhum lands or areas for maintaining soil nutrients and soil fertility that is important for sustaining biodiversity and soil fertility.
