Abstract

In August 1942, Enrico Fermi, the physicist who led the scientific team building the first atomic pile at the University of Chicago, asked Robert Stone what would be the danger to the scientists when they activated the pile and how they could protect themselves from excessive radiation exposure. This was the first pile reactor ever built, and there was no direct experience or data for Dr Stone to use.
