Abstract
In 1942, at the age of 17 and just out of high school, Jack Sherman volunteered for war service. He enlisted because he wanted to join the U.S. Army Signal Corps. This would mean training at the Illinois Institute of Technology and the Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago. At the Met Lab, Arthur Compton was coordinating fission research. Enrico Fermi was developing the first nuclear reactor.
