Abstract
Objective To determine the risk factors for post-traumatic endophthalmitis cuase by intraocular foreign bodies. Methods A consecutive retrospective study of patients with intraocular foreign bodies between Jan 2003 and May 2010 was undertaken.Patients with post-traumatic endophthalmitis were identified and added to an endophthalmitis database.Any association between those parameters and the subsequent development of endophthalmitis was investigated by multiple logistic regression. Results There were 14 patients who developed clinically significant endophthalmitis in 169 patients; the frequency of endophthalmitis after intraocular foreign bodies was 8.3%.Risk factors identified after multivariate analysis were capsular rupture at the time of primary repair during lensectomy. Conclusions Capsular rupture at the time of primary repair during lensectomy is independent risk factor associated with the development of post-traumatic endophthalmitis. Key words: Intraocular foreign bodies; Traumatic endophthalmitis; Multiple logistic regression; Risk factors.
