Abstract
India ranks second among millions of HIV-infected people in Southeast Asia. Studies have pointed out various risk behaviors (injection- or sex-related) that contribute to HIV infection. The study aimed to examine the patterns of risk behaviors among opioid and alcohol dependence in two age groups and also to examine the prevalence of HIV seropositivity and its relationship with risk behaviors. One hundred fifty-four consecutive male patients of opioid/alcohol dependence syndrome were included in the study and analyzed in relation to their drug use pattern. Injection risk was significantly higher than sexual risk in both age groups but the association of injection and sexual risk was significant in younger age group only. Sexual risk behaviors were higher in younger age group of HIV seropositives. There is a need to monitor the prevalence of HIV and promote interventions for safer sex in Indian setup. (authors)
