Abstract

BACKGROUND: Rhinitis is the inflammation of the nose. The rhinitis classification considers different phenotypes characterized by distinct etiopathogenetic mechanisms. The most common types are infectious rhinitis and allergic rhinitis. Rinalt® is a medical device class II CE formulated as a nasal spray. Rinalt® contains Mucotannil® complex, seawater, dexpanthenol, and essential balsamic oils. Rinalt® exerts a protective barrier against pathogens, allergens, irritants, and harmful substances; and has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, decongestant, and mucolytic properties. METHODS: Therefore, the aim of the recent retrospective experience, conducted in the private practice of 47 Italian otorhinolaryngologists, was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this medical device or others in managing patients with rhinitis. RESULTS: The retrospective experience included 1463 (776 males, mean age 49 years) patients retrospectively evaluated before and after a 4-week course with a non-pharmacological remedy for rhinitis. The visual analog scale measured signs and symptoms severity. One thousand one hundred seventy-five patients used Rinalt® and 288 other intranasal non-pharmacological products. CONCLUSIONS: Rinalt® significantly and safely diminished the scores of nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, post-nasal drip, and mucus drainage compared with other products (P<0.05 for all). In conclusion, the present survey evidenced that Rinalt® may induce a safe control of respiratory complaints in patients with rhinitis.
