Abstract

One of the most important unsolved problems in micro vascular surgery is the rigor or contraction of the wall of small vessels. In ischemia, the smooth muscles seem to develop a condition of contracture comparable with rigor mortis. This rigor can be observed especially after toe transfers and re plantation of fingers after crush injuries; it is characterized by a contracture of small arteries and veins that cannot be neutralized with drugs. Disturbing circulation, this rigor may lead to tissue damage and necrosis.
