Abstract

The Pediatric Inpatient Medical Psychiatric Program (Selya 6) at Hasbro Children's Hospital is a unique environment structured to simultaneously address the physical and emotional needs of adolescents. Located at the top floor of Rhode Island's only Level 1 trauma center for children, this unit manages typical medical conditions with psychiatric comorbidity, with access to specialty consultations from departments within the hospital. Early this year, Selya 6 found itself needing to recalibrate its integrated approach in the caring for patients; thus, the unit reformed the Professional Shared Governance Committee (PSGC). The PSGC was composed of representation from psychiatry, pediatrics, psychology, social work, nursing, and milieu staff. This article explores the implementation of a new behavior system to promote positive reinforcement for patients using the PSGC, and examines Erik Erikson's Identity versus Role Confusion as an overarching principle for growth during a critical development period.
