Abstract
Self-determination is one of the controversial concepts in international law. On one hand, it gives hope to the oppressed and colonised people. On another hand, it threatens the existence of established states. It is often cited by freedom fighters, and even terrorists, in justification of their actions in the face of condemnations and reproaches; thus, the popular statement [o]ne man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter”.This article outlines the nature, scope and limit of the right to self-determination.
