Abstract
A RECENT study of published earthquake epicentres for Botswana in central southern Africa reveals a high level of seismic activity over the vast areas of the country where the solid geology is almost totally obscured by Tertiary to Recent Kalahari Sands. Between September 1965 and August 1971 the seismograph network of the Rhodesia Meteorological Services located fifty epicentres within Botswana1. Most of these events were of Richter magnitude 3 or smaller, but epicentres for one magnitude 5 and four magnitude 4 events were among those published. By using the data from the local seismograph network many smaller events become available in addition to those used by Fairhead and Girdler2 from the Worldwide Standardized Seismograph Network (WWSSN) data.
