Abstract
In section 6.5.2 we introduced the notion of phrasal compounds and found that they differ from ordinary compounds in retaining more than one major stress. However, we did not examine the changes to which these major stresses can be submitted when the phrasal compound is preceded or followed by other major-stressed words in a phrase. These changes represent two kinds of rhythmical variation and it is these that we will concentrate on in the present chapter.
