Abstract
Tropes, like metaphors, metonymies, and synecdoches, fulfill many purposes in political discourses, especially in regard to positive self-presentation and the negative presentation of the other. With regard to the ideational metafunction of language, they help construct political ‘realities,’ reduce political complexities, vivify and illustrate political ideas, and foreground, background, or hide specific political aspects, actors, or actions. With respect to the interpersonal metafunction of language, they are frequently employed to support political identification, to promote in-group solidarity or out-group discrimination, to create feelings of (in)security, to (de)legitimize political actions as well as their omission, and to mobilize political followers.
