Abstract

The specialty of paediatrics should be structured into a “common trunk” of general paediatrics followed by a paediatric subspecialty, such as Paediatric Emergency Medicine. At the European level, the recommended duration of training is 3 and 2 years, respectively. The specialty of Emergency Medicine has been very recently endorsed by the UEMS as a full medical specialty with a 5-year training program. However, these European recommendations should take into account the diversity of health systems throughout the 27 countries of the European Union. In France, the specialty of Emergency Medicine will be 5 years, including a six-month obligatory module of Paediatric Emergency Medicine and a six-month free module that could be Paediatrics. The current Syllabus of Paediatric Emergency Medicine has been recently submitted to the French Commission of Residencies and Fellowships with the aim of having the French Ministry of Health and Education to implement a specific Diploma of Paediatric Emergency Medicine that would complete the specific training either in Paediatrics or Emergency Medicine, and therefore greatly improve the knowledge, competences and skills of physicians and residents working in Paediatric and General Emergency Departments.
