Abstract

Ion-cyclotron instabilities driven unstable by E×B drift in a low-pressure beam produced plasma are shown to be stablilized by lower hybrid pump waves under certain parameter conditions. Suppression is due to a ponderomotive force which shifts the frequency towards the cyclotron harmonics, thus increasing ion-cyclotron damping.
