Abstract
Strabo's Pontic ancestors saw their lives transformed by the Mithridatic Wars. His account of his family's history shows how they coped: they re-anchored their identities by retelling and reshaping family stories. The unsolved mystery of his ancestor Dorylaus the Younger can be explained by such an instance of rewriting family history.
