Abstract

Summary In Western culture the philosophy of language of Aristotle has been very influential for a long time. The 20th century has seen a change in the philosophy of language. In this, our century many philosophers have been critical of traditional Western philosophy of language. In the underlying paper I shall discuss the criticism of Austin and Heidegger and compare Austin's new visions with Heidegger's new visions on the philosophy of language. In doing so I hope to contribute to the dialogue between phenomenological and Anglo-Saxon philosophy. In traditional Western philosophy of language Aristotle's role is important. According to Aristotle words are signs of representations in our mind and representations in our mind are signs of things. Not all meaningful sentences are of equal importance according to Aristotle, for in philosophy descriptive sentences are the authentical sentences.
