Abstract

Hendricks et al. () questioned our clarification of Mexican wolf historical range and our criticism of their expansion proposals far to the north and west. A recent habitat suitability analysis identifies large areas of high quality habitat in Mexico and the latest population viability analysis shows Mexican wolves can be recovered in their historical range. Expanding historical range descriptions based on poorly understood distribution of molecular markers is unnecessary and serves only to impede the recent successful progress to recover the Mexican wolf.
