Abstract

Mountain Fires is a remarkable scholarly achievement; it constitutes a valuable contribution to an understanding of China's recent history at the same time that it presents an in-depth appraisal of the three-year period under consideration. The sixty-seven-page bibliography, consisting mostly of works in Chinese, is itself a mine of information that would be useful in researching other topics of the period covered in its narrative.
