Abstract

There are many large dams in Peninsular Malaysia which are designed based on ICOLD guidelines. One of ICOLD requirement is to consider earthquake resistant design for large dams and appurtenant structures. Based on ICOLD (2016), seismic hazard parameters and criteria has to be established for determining realistic ground motions for the dam’s site. This paper presented the latest compilation of seismic hazard parameters that should be considered in seismic hazard analysis for earthquake resistant design for large dams and appurtenant structures in Peninsular Malaysia. Earthquake catalogue, seismotectonic condition, identification of potential sources of earthquakes are also included. The characteristics of each potential earthquake sources attenuation equations, and seismic hazard parameters for each seismic source are discussed in detailed in the paper. Information from this paper can be considered for future Seismic Hazard Analysis for large dams in Peninsular Malaysia.
