Abstract
The use of piezoresistance stress gauges to measure longitudinal and lateral stresses behind the shock front has become very popular in the last two decades. While the longitudinal gauge calibrations were achieved with the help of other techniques, the lateral stress gauge results could not be compared with other tests, resulting in some controversies between different workers. In the present review we show that these controversies have actually a very small effect on the handling and calibration procedures for the lateral stress gauge. Some important applications are also reviewed and discussed.
