Abstract A comparative study of two programs written to perform algebra on trigonometric series with polynomial coefficients is given. One program is due to D. Barton and the other one to a group from the Bureau des Longitudes and Meudon Observatory. The internal arrangement of the terms of the series in the computer and the multiplication subroutine are described for both programs. Finally, some general principles that render such programs efficient are set forth.
