Abstract

TMX-U has successfully demonstrated electrostatic endplugging which substantially enhances ion axial confinement. The impurity flux and gas load on the plasma can strongly affect the formation of the confining potential; this is the plasma-material interaction issue that is of primary concern in present-day mirror devices. The heat load on the walls is generally low and has not been a major concern. This paper reviews the experiments that have been performed in TMX and TMX-U which relate to the issue of gas load and its control. We shall also discuss how this issue is being addressed by the methods of vacuum system design, wall conditioning and halo shielding.
