Abstract

We studied the existence and some features of the breeding territory of the Great Spotted Cuckoo (Clamator glandarius). We met the need for individual recognition by means of a method based upon the concept of restriction of all activities inside the boundaries of territory, and the calls of territorial birds. The Great Spotted Cuckoo is a territorial species which selects woodland areas ofQuercus spp trees instead of grassland areas. Territory size depends on Magpie nest density. In the central Sierra Morena (Cordoba, Spain) we obtained a territory size of about 3.7 km2 — 60 host nests — with two zones, one of these presumably used for hiding and the other for parasitizing.
