Abstract

Abstract The rotation of smectic layer in the antiferroelectric liquid crystals upon application of asymmetric voltage pulses has been observed. The influence of the cell configuration upon this layer rotation has been investigated. This layer rotation is not directly related with the interaction between liquid crystal molecules and the spacer at the liquid crystal-spacer interface. The rotation of smectic layer has been observed not only in a monodomain cell but also in a multidomain cell. This layer rotation has also been observed in ferroelectric liquid crystal as the same manner in antiferroelectric liquid crystals.
