Abstract

The relationship between social mobility and migration in rural India is analyzed using data collected in 1962-1963 on 906 heads of households from villages in Punjab and Haryana. In particular the author examines how return migration to place of origin affects the process of status attainment. Some comparisons are made with the United States. (ANNOTATION)
