Abstract

Retrospective conversion is the process of turning a library's existing paper catalog records into machine-readable form. This article outlines some of the key processes of a typical retrospective conversion project against the backdrop of an actual project undertaken by the Main Library of the University of the West Indies at St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. The pitfalls encountered as well as the valuable lessons learned during the project implementation phase can benefit any library thinking about or preparing to perform retrospective conversion. The outsourced phase of this conversion process was undertaken by OCLC from January to August, 2001.
