Abstract

The estuarine region is found to be rich in suspended sediment concentration brought by river waters. The high concentration of suspended sediment near the river mouth induces high reflectance in the visible part of the EMR spectrum, even in red region. IRS-1C WiFS gives wide scope to study dynamics of suspended sediment field. Sediment-dominated waters of Mahanadi estuary, Bay of Bengal, East Coast of India, has been taken as a study area. The statistical relationship between the water quality parameters has been investigated. In the present study, an atmospheric correction model has been developed to retrieve the subsurface-diffused reflectance from the IRS-1C WiFS bands. Using the satellite-derived subsurface reflectance of the IRS-1C WiFS band-3 and the in situ data of Mahanadi estuary, a suspended retrieval algorithm has been developed.
