Abstract

Sea-crossing bridges are exposed to great waves. The wave induced dynamic effect on the structural response of the pier was carefully studied in this paper. The pier of Pingtan Strait railway bridge was taken as the example structure. The modal and dynamic response of the example pier under regular wave loadings were carried out using finite element software USFOS. The dynamic and static response of deep water rectangular pier under different wave and structural parameters were calculated and the dynamic amplification factors (DAFs) were calculated through the comparison between dynamic and static response. The main results of this study show that, 1) the dynamic response which refers to the base moment and base shear of Z05 pier is larger than the static response under wave action; 2) the dynamic response of the deep water rectangular bridge is sensitive to the wave height; 3) structural period affects the value of DAF more significantly than the other parameters. When the natural period of the pier is larger than 1 sec, the wave force should be assessed by dynamic analysis to consider the dynamic amplification effect.
