Abstract

After careful experimental evaluation of the action of Histoacryl, a blue-stained butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, in rabbit eyes, this particular tissue adhesive was routinely applied in humans during the following situations of retinal detachment surgery: (a) sealing needle perforations of sclera and choroid, (b) securing sutures in thin sclera, (c) covering scleral defects like staphylomas or diathermy necroses, with dura mater or donor sclera, (d) circumscribed widening of encircling bands, and (e) closure of scleral trapdoors after application of intrascleral diathermy. Provided that the place of application was dry and the amount of adhesive applied as small as possible, and that all surplus glue was removed, the adhesive strength and histocompatibility of the material proved to be excellent. The use of Histoacryl is therefore recommended strongly for the indications listed above.
